Summary

The Korea Immigration Service is warning the public about voice phishing scams where individuals impersonate Ministry of Justice officials. These scams involve requests for personal information, demands to appear at the Public Prosecutor's Office, or urging the download of suspicious applications. The public should be vigilant and avoid providing information or taking actions based on such calls.

⚠️**[Urgent Notice] Scam Alert: Impersonation of the Ministry of Justice (Immigration)**

This is an alert from the Korea Immigration Service, Ministry of Justice.

We have received reports of suspected voice phishing attempts using official phone numbers of the Ministry of Justice departments (such as the Immigration Screening Division) and national immigration offices (Immigration and Foreign Affairs Office/Administration, Foreigner Support Center, 1345 Call Center, etc.). Please be aware of the following scenarios:

(Example 1) Scammers call using official phone numbers of Ministry of Justice departments and affiliated organizations, such as the Immigration Screening Division's main number (02-2110-4039), the International Criminal Affairs Division (02-2110-3294), the Ministry of Justice Customer Support Center (02-2110-3000), and the Foreigner Support Center (02-6908-1345). They impersonate staff members (mentioning specific names) and claim that you are involved in a case, demanding your appearance at the Public Prosecutor's Office or requesting personal information.

(Example 2) An automated voice message stating, "This is the Ministry of Justice. Your passport has been stolen or invalidated," prompts you to press '1'. The connected consultant then requests personal information, claiming it is necessary to resolve the passport theft issue.

(Example 3) Scammers impersonate immigration officials (specific examiners), inquire about your entry and exit records to specific countries, list various fraud and murder cases that occurred in high-risk countries such as Southeast Asia, and ask you to download an immigration office application.

Important Notes:

  • The Ministry of Justice Customer Support Center (02-2110-3000) number is for receiving calls only and cannot be used to make outgoing calls.
  • The Foreigner Support Center (1345 Call Center) does not display 02-6908-1345 as the outgoing number and does not call foreigners residing overseas.

If a department or agency of the Ministry of Justice requests your appearance at the Public Prosecutor's Office, provision of personal information, or downloading of a smartphone application, suspect voice phishing and take precautions to avoid becoming a victim.

In addition, be especially cautious when receiving similar calls, as scammers may impersonate phone numbers of other immigration and foreigner-related agencies or use other methods.
