Notice: Beware of Voice Phishing Impersonating Immigration Officials
Summary
The Korea Immigration Service is warning the public about voice phishing attempts where individuals impersonate immigration officials. These scammers may request personal information or business proposals via phone. The public is advised to be cautious and verify any suspicious calls directly with the relevant immigration office.
Notice: Beware of Voice Phishing
Please be especially cautious of phone calls impersonating immigration officials. Recently, there have been repeated reports of suspected voice phishing attempts impersonating immigration officials from the Yeosu Immigration and Foreign Affairs Office. We are providing the following information.
Recent Case Example
A person identifying himself as 'Kim Min-guk' from the General Affairs Division of the Yeosu Immigration and Foreign Affairs Office called from a mobile phone number (7632-3614), requesting a quote for the annex building's window frame construction. He promised to meet in front of the General Affairs Division of the Yeosu Office on March 19th in the morning and requested a business card and business registration certificate. However, the Yeosu Immigration and Foreign Affairs Office does not have a 'General Affairs Division,' and there is no employee named 'Kim Min-guk'.
Important Considerations
The Ministry of Justice and its Immigration and Foreign Affairs Offices never use personal mobile phones to request personal information or solicit business. Similar cases impersonating officials from other Immigration and Foreign Affairs Offices may occur in the future. If you receive such a call, please be especially careful to prevent any harm. If you receive a suspicious call, please verify the facts directly with the relevant office.
We urge the public to exercise extreme caution.
